The Kookaburras smashed the reigning Olympic champions Argentina 5-2 in Tokyo to further stake their claim for gold.

The world No.1 ranked Australians backed up a dominant start to their Olympic campaign with another remarkable performance, and the the victory ensures the Kookaburras are on track to top Pool A.

Australia were down early, conceding a goal inside five minutes before Blake Govers produced an equaliser late in the opening quarter then scored with a drag flick to break the game open.

They held a 4-1 lead at halftime thanks to goals from Tom Wickham, Govers and Lachlan Sharp. Jeremy Hayward put his team up 5-1 in the second half before Argentina grabbed a late consolation goal.

The Kookaburras are seeking to avenge their quarter-final loss to Netherlands at Rio de Janeiro, which marked the first time they missed out on a medal since 1988.

Since the appointment of new coach Colin Batch in the aftermath of the Rio Games, the Kookaburras have won the Commonwealth Games and Champions Trophy in addition to the 2019 Pro League.

They’ve started these Olympics in fine fashion, defeating hosts Japan 5-3 in a tough victory before smashing India 7-1.
