Glenn Maxwell continued his glorious summer with the blade in Hobart tonight, but his blitz of 70 runs from just 37 balls wasn’t enough to steer the Melbourne Stars home against the Hurricanes.

The Stars looked to be flying to victory against the men in purple as Maxwell blasted his second half-century of the tournament, but from the moment the Melbourne skipper lost his wicket at 5-112 – in pursuit of 165 to win – the visitors’ innings took an extraordinary nosedive.

The Stars lost four wickets for just 26 runs when Maxwell was back in the rooms, as the Hurricanes cruised to a 21-run victory.

Right-arm paceman Nathan Ellis spearheaded the Hurricanes’ fightback, removing Liam Hatcher and Lance Morris and conceding just 11 runs off his four overs, while big-framed quick Scott Boland (3-22) also enjoyed an effective night with the ball.

But it was Maxwell who provided the grandest entertainment for those in the Bellerive Oval stands, peeling off six fours and five sixes as he shot to the top rung of the 2020-21 Big Bash League runs leaderboard.

The right-hander has racked up 249 runs at an average of 62.25 to be leading Shaun Marsh, Colin Ingram, Callum Ferguson and Alex Hales.

Maxwell’s brilliant BBL campaign has followed his phenomenal form in the limited-overs games against India, which saw him plunder 167 runs in three one-day internationals at an average of 83.5, before peeling off an innings of 54 runs in the final T20 international.
