Melbourne Storm skipper Cameron Smith is likely to become the first man to 400 NRL games after agreeing to a new deal with the club.
Smith’s future was in doubt following the side’s grand final defeat at the hands of the Sydney Roosters, but finally put pen to paper on a two-year deal.
Smith is currently on 384 career games, all as a member of the Storm, and barring serious injury, should cross the magical 400-game mark in the 2019 season.
Following the retirements of fellow veterans Billy Slater and Ryan Hoffman, as well as the defection of Cooper Cronk, Smith’s potential departure would have left the Storm with a big void to fill.
However, the 35-year-old mentioned how he wanted to assist the coaching staff.
“With Bill Slater and Ryan Hoffman retiring last season, I want to give Craig [Bellamy] and the coaching staff all the support they need, particularly with so much talent coming through,” Smith told the Storm’s website.
“I’m very happy to be continuing my career with the club that gave me an opportunity to play first grade rugby league.”
In an interesting twist, if the veteran hooker is able to appear in every game, a home clash against arch rivals Cronulla will make for a special 400th game.
